  • Chapon, Jules Chapon was born on 4 September 1914 in Heemstede as the son of Barend Juda Chapon and Mietje Zilverberg. His father was a stockbroker and was a member of the Association for Stock Trading in Amsterdam. His father was also a member of the municipal council of Heemstede, of the church council of the Jewish community in Haarlem, and was on the board of the housing association "Tuinwijk". One of the earliest paintings by Jules Chapon, entitled "Backyards", was probably painted from the window of his parental home in this neighbourhood. Jules Chapon initially worked as a stockbroker at his father's office. In 1940 he began taking painting lessons from the well-known Haarlem painter Kees Verweij. During the occupation, Chapon, as a Jew, had to go into hiding. The Jewish Historical Museum has a series of drawings on loan that he made during his period in hiding. Although Chapon himself survived the war, he was deeply affected by it. His father was executed on 2 February 1943, together with chief rabbi Philip Frank, among others. His mother, brother and two of his sisters died in Auschwitz. After the war, Chapon took painting lessons from Henri Frederic Boot. In 1950, he had an exhibition in 'Het Huis van Looy' in Haarlem. The Haarlems Dagblad wrote about this exhibition: "A first tour of this exhibition gives an impression of the great sensitivity and care of these paintings." The newspaper had nothing but praise for the young artist: "This serious, gifted artist fully deserves that people show interest in his work." Chapon had meanwhile moved into a small studio at the Klein Heiligland in Haarlem and now devoted himself entirely to painting. He participated in various exhibitions, including in 1952, 1959, 1962 and more recently in 1989 and 1991. In addition to drawings and paintings, Chapon also made murals for, for example, the head office of the Dutch Bank and for the aircraft factory Fokker. In 1973, Chapon emigrated to the Dordogne in France where he lived and worked with his second wife (and his daughters born from this marriage) until he died on 6 January 2007.
