  • Julianus Josephus (Jules) Rummens (Antwerp, 1 March 1905 – 2000) was a Dutch sculptor, stained glass artist, painter and teacher.[1]
Life and work Rummens was a son of the Roermond ironer Maria Antonetta Hubertina Rummens. His grandfather Corneille Rummens worked as a sculptor at the Atelier Cuypers-Stoltzenberg. Rummens was trained at the municipal drawing school in Roermond (1919-1924). From 1924 to 1927 he was a teacher at the NV Kunstwerkplaatsen in Roermond.[2] In the 1930s he studied at the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. Together with Piet Schoenmakers, Jozef Thissen and Victor Sprenkels he was one of the first teachers at the Institute for Visual Arts in Roermond, which started in 1947. Rummens' students included Bob Booms, Leo Hofman and Jan Tullemans. Rummens worked for some time at the Cuypers studio and for the St. Joris studio in Beesel. He painted landscapes, still lifes and religious scenes and made or designed wood carvings, stained glass windows and ceramic sculptures. The stained glass for Assen and Spoordonk was made by the Roermond firm Soentjens, his ceramic work by St. Joris. He also illustrated books by his childhood friend, the Jewish writer Jacob Hiegentlich.[3] Rummens was a member of the Roermond Art Circle and the General Catholic Artists' Association.
