Cornelis (Kees) Andrea was a Dutch artist. He continued to paint and make drawings until old age. He designed monuments, was a textile artist and was also a graphic artist, painter and draftsman.
Andrea was born as the son of a lithographer. His father August printed prints for many years for famous artists such as Maurits Cornelis Escher, Jan Veth and Chris Lebeau. Two uncles of the young Andrea were also in the graphic trade. His teachers were: Francis d' Erdely and Chris de Moor. After training at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, he worked for several years at the First Dutch Free Studio, under the direction of François Erdely and Christiaan de Moor. From 1930 to 2002 he worked in The Hague. Andréa also worked in Loosduinen, Hungary, France, Spain, Limburg and Rijswijk. In 1947 he was appointed teacher at the Free Academy in The Hague (see: Van der Stelt 2006). Andrea mastered many techniques. He was: painter, watercolourist, draftsman, pen artist, etcher, lithographer, maker of woodcuts, graphic artist, illustrator, monumental artist, wall painter, textile artist (weaving technique) and maker of mosaics. His favourite subjects were: portraits, figure representations, religion, interiors, landscapes, animals, still lifes and winter landscapes. In 2005 the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag held a major retrospective exhibition on the occasion of the artist's ninetieth birthday. Andrea was a member of: the Pulchri Studio, the Association of Practitioners of the Monumental Arts, the Dutch Watercolourists Circle, the Verve group, the Realists and the Dutch Artists' Society. He is considered to be one of the artists of the New Hague School. Kees' son Pat Andrea also became a painter. He is also considered to be part of the New Hague School.
Andrea received an honourable mention for the Jacob Maris Prize in 1949. In 1951 he came second in the Jacob Maris Prize, while in 1953 he received the Jacob Maris Prize for drawing. In 1954 he received the Jacob Hartog Prize. In 1964 he received the Visser Neerlandia Prize.
