Schilder, tekenaar, graficus maakte wandschilderingen, drukrolprenten en houtsneden onderwerpen en kunstrichting: landschappelijk en figuur, gedeeltelijk non-figuratief. De werkelijkheid nooit totaal loslatend conditie: chip in glasplaat, vergeeld passe-partout.
Beïnvloed door de Groninger Kunstkring ‘De Ploeg’ heeft hij een indrukwekkende hoeveelheid prachtig werk nagelaten. Stillevens en landschappen, religieuze thema’s, holocaust, het lijden van de mens en de schepping. Venema gebruikte daarvoor uiteenlopende technieken: gouacheverf, olieverf, acrylverf en veel in zwart/wit houtsneden en linoleumdruk
