  • Maarten Jungmann is a relatively unknown Dutch painter who mainly worked in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Jungmann was born and raised in Rotterdam. In 1895 he completed a course at the Rotterdam Academy, where he specialized in drawing and painting. In the ten years that followed he developed into a productive and successful artist, partly through the mediation of the Rotterdam Kunsthandel Vaarties. Jungmann mainly concentrated on making landscapes, waterscapes, still lifes and figure studies. Characteristic is his expressionist style with fleeting touches of paint, heavy colors and dramatic lighting. Although the artist claimed not to be influenced by any art direction or style, we do see characteristics of Pointillism, Luminism and Fauvism in his work. Jungmann lived and worked almost continuously in Rotterdam during this period. The tide turned in 1925, when he exchanged his birthplace for Noordwijk aan Zee after a big argument with his art dealer. From that moment on he barely touched his brushes. Living on a meager artist's allowance, he spent his days in a large disused garage, where he spent his time and saved money collecting art and antiques. In the Second World War, a large part of his oeuvre was lost in the devastating bombing of Rotterdam. He was forced to move to Leiden in 1943, where he died in 1964 surrounded by his beloved collection.
