Machiel Brandenburg (Rotterdam, 4 mei 1907 - Kaapstad, Zuid-Afrika, 30 mei 1984) was een Nederlands schilder
en tekenaar. Brandenburg studeerde aan de Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, werkte in Rotterdam en Hilversum. Zijn vroege werk vertoont verwantschap met het Nieuwe Realisme en hij was
enige jaren lid van de Amsterdamse schildersvereniging De Brug waarin
deze realisten verenigd waren. Op 11
april 1953 emigreerde Brandenburg naar Plumstead, Zuid-Afrika. Zijn onderwerpen: figuurvoorstellingen, landschappen, naaktfiguren,
portretten en stillevens waaronder veel planten, zoals deze 'Kerstster' uit 1957. Koningin Wilhelmina bezat veel werk van
hem en was één van zijn leerlingen.
Zijn werk bevindt zich in de collecties van Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen te Rotterdam, Stedelijk Museum te Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum te Eindhoven, Paleis Het Loo en Paleis Soestdijk. Veel is in particulier bezit in Nederland, Zuid-Afrika, de Verenigde Staten en Canada.
