Beautiful hand-signed etching of "Mother with child at the kitchen table" by the Belgian painter, graphic artist, pastelist and watercolorist Marcel Stobbaerts (1899-1979). He was a versatile artist and the grandson of Jan Stobbaerts. He trained at the Academy in Brussels under the direction of C. Montald between 1915 and 1919. His early work included anecdotal scenes of Brussels popular entertainment, such as fairs, cabaret scenes and sporting events. These were painted dynamically and sometimes contained a satirical note. In the 1920s he was influenced by expressionism and futurism. He later evolved into a moody intimacy, combining sober design with a harmonious color palette. The muted luminosity emphasized his poetic approach to reality. His favorite themes were often women and children.
