... I have always made what I would like to read or see myself and am less and less concerned with whether or not it will be published. Making visual art and writing are opposites. Visual expression precedes words; when you are working visually, you think much more from image, form and composition. Writing is preceded by a processing process. Every creative product is a reflection of a part of yourself, even if you try to conceal it. People who say they do not write autobiographically may be more autobiographical than people who consciously do. In both visual and verbal work, you get the best results if you work from your gut, if something accidentally comes from your subconscious. Not if you really want to, because then it is often too forced. So it is important not to want to understand everything too well. You have to really mix things up, so deliberately seek out experiences that you have not yet mastered, that are alienating....
