Marius Bauer was a Dutch orientalist, he was born in 1867 in The Hague. He travelled a lot to Asia, Africa and Russia. Here he made sketches that he used at home for a large number of works. His style was both impressionistic and Hague school. In his own time Bauer was a well-known artist, he was compared to the master painter Rembrandt because of his loose and fluent way of working both in his etchings and watercolours. He died in 1932 in Amsterdam.
