Marten Klompien was born in 1917 in Hoogezand as the son of a bargeman. He knew early on that he wanted to become a painter, but it was not until 1934 that he was given the opportunity to follow the evening course at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He was taught by, among others, Jan Altink, AW Kort and CP de Wit. In 1945 he established himself as a professional artist in the city of Groningen. Initially his style was naturalistic and details were visible. As he grew older he began to paint more abstractly, details faded and the shapes became larger. In 1952 he had his first solo exhibition in the then famous gallery De Mangelgang. In 1955 Klompien was asked to become a member of the Groningen artists' association De Ploeg, his membership would last until 1970. Nevertheless, Klompien considered himself an outsider. With his dark palette, Klompien felt more related to the Flemish than to his colleagues at De Ploeg. Marten Klompien always continued to base his work on visible reality, no matter how far he would push the abstraction in his paintings.
