Matthijs Hage werd in 1882 in Den Haag geboren. Hij overleed in 1961 in Laren. Hage woonde en werkte in Den Haag, Amsterdam, Laren en van 1911 tot 1924 in Eemnes. Zijn atelier had hij aan de Gooijersgracht Zuid, nabij de Witte Bergen. Hij was een leerling van de Rijks Academie te Amsterdam en schilderde, aquarelleerde, tekende en schetste stillevens, heidelandschappen en kinderportretten. Was lid van de Vereniging v BK Laren-Blaricum, Gaf les aan zijn broer H.A. Hage en aan F. J.
