Maugosia Sycz is geboren in Polen waar ze op de Jagiellonen Universiteit van Krakau filosofie studeerde. Toen ze in 1979 naar Nederland kwam, studeerde ze schilderen op de Minerva Academie in Groningen en vervolgens schilderen en grafiek aan de Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, waar ze in 1985 afstudeerde. Haar docenten waren grote schilders als Ger Lataster, Co Westerik, Herman Gordijn en Jan Sierhuis.
