Miesjel (Michaël Petronella) van Gerwen was born in 1950 in Heeze.
From 1972 to 1976 he trained as a graphic artist/illustrator at the then Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch, now AKV Sint Joost.
As an illustrator/designer he often had his own editorial commentary function. In 1982 he founded the youth magazine Zone 3 and drew comics and illustrations for it. His daily drawn columns in the Bossche Brabants Dagblad under the title "'t Moer" (1995-2018) have almost become a kind of life's work with 3289 episodes. For the university magazine of the Radboud University in Nijmegen he made endless prints, illustrations and image columns for 25 years
As a visual artist and designer, 'outside' had increasingly become his workplace. This began with his work as a designer of spectacular floats for the cultural-historical parade of the Brabantsedag in Heeze and as a developer of art projects and programmer of visual arts at Theaterfestival Boulevard in 's-Hertogenbosch.
From 1982 to 2001 he worked as a designer for the groundbreaking youth theatre company Teneeter in Nijmegen. In addition to all the posters, he also designed a number of sets. In Bosch Parade in 's-Hertogenbosch (artistic director from 2011 to the present), many of his diverse talents come together. He thus manifested his love for the arts and for 'his' city, where he has lived and worked since 1982.
In his studio in 's-Hertogenbosch he had been drawing freely every day since 2012. Result: a growing series of Dagtekeningen. This led to the project Ivoren Toren, with which he performed together with cellist Jacqueline Hamelink at festivals such as Boulevard, Oerol and Kleine Karoo Nasionale Kunstenfees in South Africa.
