Information about the artist:
Antoinette ('Netty') Cecilia Catharina Michels was born on 24-11-1919 in the village of Beek in the Gelderse Achterhoek, after which she lived and worked in Eindhoven, only starting to paint when she was forty.
She painted the uncomplicated everyday life in which her native village has always been a fertile source of inspiration. In addition, the unreal atmosphere of the dream and the fairy tale often meet in her paintings. Her works also testify to a lively sense of humour. "Her canvases are a dream world in which it is beneficial to lose oneself", wrote the art historian and director of the Mauritshuis Hans Hoetink.
Her works exude a great deal of naivety with a friendly view of society. "I was born with a smile", she once said about the content of her work.
Netty Michels was married to the painter Harry Maas (1906-1982).
She has exhibited at home and abroad. Following an exhibition of her work in 2007 in Museum Kempenland in Eindhoven, a booklet about her work was published " Paintered tales ".
Netty Michels died on 3-5-1995 in Roermond.
