Nic Jonk came from a poor farming family and entered the advertising profession at the age of 17. In 1947 he took an evening course at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. There he had Wessel Couzijn as a teacher, who encouraged him to continue. One day a week he continued his drawing training at the Rijksnormalschool, also in Amsterdam. In 1949 he attended the first Sonsbeek exhibition in Sonsbeek, Arnhem. As a result, he decided to focus on sculpture. In 1953 he went to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. Three years later, disappointed with the training, he quit and started his own business. From 1961 to 1962, Nic Jonk taught at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch. He then founded Ateliers '63 together with Wessel Couzijn and Mari Andriessen, among others, where he also taught until 1966. He created the design for the first (1964) Colombina and Arlecchino, theater prizes of the VSCD. In the 1974-1975 school year he also taught briefly at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In 1965 he settled in Grootschermer with his wife and six children, where he set up a sculpture park.
