Antique Brass Wall Cross with Jesus Statue (Belgium, 1930s)
Beautiful antique solid brass wall hanging cross, originating from Belgium, made by JMPC Deposé and signed on the back. This special piece dates from the 1930s and contains both the INRI and IHS markings, both symbols with deep religious meaning.
INRI stands for “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum”, which in Latin means: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”. This refers to the inscription that, according to the Bible, was placed above Jesus on the cross. Also present is IHS, a Christogram that represents the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, and is often interpreted as “Iesus Hominum Salvator” – “Jesus, Savior of Mankind”.
The cross is made of heavy brass and Jesus' body is attached to the cross with three small nails, the ends of the nails being bent over at the back for extra strength. This emphasises the care with which this work of art was made.
On the back of the cross the piece is signed by Deposé, confirming the label of provenance as an original Belgian work.
There is some light wear due to age, with some stains and patina, which contributes to the authentic look of the antique piece. All details are clearly visible in the photos, and these form an integral part of the description. The cross and the figure are completely original and in very good condition, especially considering the almost hundred year old age of the piece.
Dimensions:

• Weight of cross: 337 grams • Crotch height: 25.5 cm (10”) • Crotch width: 16.5 cm (6.5”) • Height of crucifix: 10 cm (4”) • Width of crucifix: 7.5 cm (3”)
A particularly beautiful and authentic piece for the wall, with a strong religious and historical meaning.
Dispatch: It will be carefully packed and shipped insured.
