The Dutch painter, graphic artist, photographer, writer and teacher Paul Citroen was born on December 15, 1896 in Berlin. His father, who came from Amsterdam, owned a fur shop in Berlin. Citroen described the environment in which he grew up as bourgeois. "For me, the citizen emanates a certain stability, a certain calmness, because I cannot quite oversee how bourgeois I am myself, but I am a moderate person because I know very well what temptation there is in fanaticism." Berlin In the family, much attention was paid to art and culture, especially literature. Citroen started to draw a lot early in his life. This was encouraged by his parents. With a school friend - Erwin Blumenfeld, who would later become a well-known photographer - he later conducted photographic experiments. Citroen studied at the Kunsthochschule in Berlin. He became interested in the avant-garde that was developing in Berlin. He also built up a collection of contemporary art himself, bought from a sum of money donated by his father.
