Peter Wever is a German artist living in Berlin. Wever is known for his color etchings, which mainly depict relationships. His work is warm and often a bit humorous. Couples embracing are the main theme, but sketches of a computer freak or two people at a messy breakfast table or almost submerged in a bathtub are also among the subjects he has portrayed.
“The modern, lofty, committed, contemporary, the perpetual and the constantly repeated from our life in art means little to me. What appeals to me in art is the drama in the everyday. The unspectacular life seen through my own eyes and captured in my personal handwriting. I try to capture that in my work. To achieve it I need a lot of time. Expressing a lot with minimal means is what I want. It should of course provide an interesting picture. I like to move between “less is more” and “less is bore”. This creates the strongest tension between two poles: literally between two persons and the interpersonal that figuratively takes place between them. Often my figures look almost identical. As a simultaneous expression of one and the same person. The simplification in form leads to identical body position. The rotation and symmetrical rotation of images creates diagonals that suggest movement. What happens between the figures runs through these diagonals, is invisible and is located in the center of gravity that slides out of the image. I etch mechanically without chemicals. Everything is scratched directly into the copper, with a drypoint and roughened with the mezzotint cradle iron. In this way I can draw directly in the plate, remove it again, apply pressure ink, polish it and finally get the image on the plate. The color image gradually develops in different printing runs.”
Desperately, the artist waits for the moment when the image comes to life. But if that happens, then the artist has a happy day.
Peter Wever's color etchings are unique. The basis is the color etching in which he then applies accents with acrylic paint.
