Piet Verhaert - Man in interior - Sold

Piet Verhaert(1852-1908)  was a Belgian painter and etcher of genre scenes, cityscapes, interiors, figures and portraits. He also painted decorative portraits. Initially he studied sculpture at the Academy of Antwerp, but switched to painting. In 1873 he debuted at the Triennial Salon in Antwerp. He worked in Belgium and the Netherlands and briefly also in Paris. Verhaert was a member of the artists' group Les XX and later of Wees U Self, which also included Emile Claus, Edgar Farasijn, Theodore Verstraete, and others. Verhaert was influenced by Henri de Braekeleer. He painted commissioned portraits and many cityscapes and interiors of beautiful buildings. He also painted this work, which is a beautiful example of his oeuvre. The work is hand signed and beautifully framed in a wooden sculpted frame. The painting is in good condition with traces of age.
