Saul Steinberg (Ramnicul-Sarat (Romania) June 15, 1914 - New York City May 12, 1999) was a Romanian/American cartoonist, illustrator, painter, graphic artist and photographer best known for his iconic contributions to The New Yorker magazine.
He studied philosophy at the University of Bucharest, but chose not to complete his studies and enrolled as an architecture student at the Politecnico di Milano in Milan.
In 1941 he fled Italy and eventually settled in the United States, where he made more than 1,200 drawings for The New Yorker, including 87 covers.
His drawing style is characterized by a playful, childlike scribbling quality, while at the same time maintaining an elegant dexterity that succinctly describes a wide variety of subjects.
