Information about the artist:
Theodorus ('Theo') Eissens (Amsterdam, August 28, 1952 – Amsterdam, July 6, 2015), graphic artist (etcher and screen printer), photographer and painter.
-Education: Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam (1971-1976).
Initially, Theo Eissens mainly made etchings and screen prints and also combinations of both techniques. In 2004, his focus shifted from prints on paper to works on canvas and wooden panel. His 'new' concept included photography combined with abstract and geometric shapes in acrylic paint. He first painted lines on canvas and then screen printed the photo. Sometimes with different color combinations in the same photos.
Berlin played an important role in his life. From 1992 onwards he lived and worked for short and longer periods in Berlin and also had exhibitions there (with AR Penck and Bruce McLean, among others). He also exhibited his work in New York.
Theo Eissens died quite suddenly in 2015, after his last exhibition 'Berlin Calling'. His death came at a time when he seemed to be receiving more recognition as an artist and more commissions were coming in.
In 2018, the book “Theo Eissens - Linea Recta from A to B” was published, an extensive catalog showing the last fifteen years of his work. A worthy document for a great artist.
