He then studied at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Heynes was a pupil of Gé Röling and Willem van den Berg. From 1940 to 1942 he was a pupil of the Drawing Department and from 1942 to 1947 of the Free Painting Department. He made study trips to France (Brittany) and lived and worked in Sweden from 1947 to 1953 (including Öland, Småland and Stockholm). From 1953 he lived with his family in Amsterdam. From 1960 he increasingly focused on watercolours, drawings and etchings and his work gradually became figuratively abstract. Subjects of his work include landscape, city, harbour, cattle, still life, portrait, figure and nude.
