After working for some time at an advertising agency and as a steward at KLM, Van Driel invented FC Knudde. This comic strip, which revolves around the bizarre adventures of a football club, appeared three times a week from 1973, and later daily, on the sports page of the Algemeen Dagblad. In a short time, the adventures of defender Jaap and goalkeeper Dirk became extremely popular, after which many comic albums followed, and now also appears on NU.nl.

Five years after FC Knudde, Van Driel made De Stamgasten , in which animals played the leading role. Pigs, penguins, camels, giraffes ended up in the most absurd situations, in which they often show human traits.
