Utagawa Kuniyoshi - Kabuki actor in the role of Tsubone Iwafuji - 1847-52 - Sold

A beautiful color woodblock print of a Kabuki actor under a blossoming tree, made by Utagawa Kuniyoshi around the mid 19th century. The print is beautifully framed in a wooden frame with glass.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a leading Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period (1797–1861). He is known for his vivid and imaginative prints, including the famous "108 Heroes of the Suikoden". His style is characterized by bold lines, vivid colors, and dramatic compositions. Although admired for his artistic skill, Kuniyoshi was also criticized for his political satire, which sometimes caused trouble with the authorities. Nevertheless, he is considered a master of ukiyo-e art with a lasting influence on both Japanese and Western art.

The condition is very good; usually red is the first color to fade with poor care, but here it is abundantly present. The frame is minimalist with red and gold accents. The back is nicely sealed and there is a matching suspension present. It offers a good opportunity for purchase and hanging.
