Willem Hamel (1860-1924) was zoon van een rijke veehandelaar. Volgde tijdens zijn opleiding aan de Ambachtschool lessen aan de Rotterdamse academie. Daarna korte tijd werkzaam als decoratieschilder. Opleiding aan Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Antwerpen. Hamel kwam op zoek naar nieuwe onderwerpen naar Drenthe. In 1891 vestigde hij zich in Rolde, dat in de jaren 1880 geliefd was bij veel kunstenaars. Om gezondheidsredenen moest hij Drenthe in 1894 verlaten, maar hij keerde nog enkele keren terug (o.a. naar Zeegse in 1896). Hamel woonde en werkte daarna vooral in Gelderland. Hij schilderde en tekende veel Drentse landschappen, vooral bosgezichten, figuurstukken en portretten, in een stijl die verwantschap met de Haagse School vertoont.
