Willem Jacob Henri Berend Sandberg (1897 – 1984) designer and typographer, was director of the Stedelijk Museum (SM) in Amsterdam from 1945 to 1963, for which he had worked since 1938 and was active as a resistance fighter during the Second World War. He was also a graphic designer. He was a member of the Sandberg family.
Sandberg grew up in Assen, where he attended grammar school. In 1919 he began studying at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he stayed for barely a year. He developed into a typographer and graphic designer thanks to experience at a printing house in Herrliberg near Zurich. Upon returning to the Netherlands in 1924, he did many graphic assignments for the PTT. In 1936 he became curator and deputy director of the Stedelijk Museum.
