..."The core of my work lies in the memory of casually picking up a shell on the North Sea beach. I have never forgotten the emotion I felt when looking attentively at the inside of this shell. It was an experience of almighty beauty, which made me realize that everything can be seen in the small and so-called everyday. I found a piece of paradise.
The skin - the touchability of the ordinary, earthly material - has become a common thread in my work. I am a surgeon who wants to dissect the world in detail from the smallest fragment.
The materiality of my work is reflected in the use of e.g. tar, wool, velvet, paper. The surgeon in me dissects these materials and limits himself to a few visual aspects such as line, color and texture. This process takes the form of a DNA study. The repetition of form and line leads to patterns and systems in which an authentic, perfect detail is revealed.
In our daily existence it is the essentials that make us survive and that is extremely intriguing.
In 2004 and 2006 I spent a few months in Zambia. The earthly reality in that country is omnipresent. We experience the essences there, which make us survive and that is extremely intriguing"...
