Information about the artist:
Alexander Franciscus Willem Emile (Willy) van Schoonhoven van Beurden (Roermond 1883 - 1963 Zuidlaren), graphic artist, painter, draftsman, secondary school art teacher and maker of woodcuts.
-Education: The National Normal School in Amsterdam. He was taught by Jr. RAAJ Graafland, ES van Beever and van Jan Toorop.
He lived and worked in Roermond, Maastricht, Amsterdam 1905-1906, Roermond until 1908, Laren until 1925, Amsterdam until 1946, Emmen 1947, Anloo until 1955 and then in Zuidlaren.
He painted, drew and etched landscapes, flowers, figures and cityscapes. He usually worked in a luministic style but, in his own words, “gradually adapted to the times”. He also made woodcuts. By profession he was a teacher of art history and drawing at the Amsterdams Lyceum. In the summers he liked to stay in South Limburg, the province of Utrecht and Het Gooi, while he liked to spend the winter in Austria or Switzerland.
Willy van Schoonhoven van Beurden was married to the artist Riek Palache (1881-1968).
He was a member of the artists' association “De Independents” and of “Sint Lucas” (Amsterdam).
