Ans WORTEL (Alkmaar 1929 - Hilvarenbeek 1996)
As an artist, Ans Wortel was an audio-didactic and had regular exhibitions from 1960 onwards. Her work consists of drawings, collages, etchings, gouaches and paintings, but mainly mixed techniques.
Since the sixties, Ans Wortel has occupied a completely unique place in post-war painting. As a wife, mother and artist she had many, often intense, life experiences that formed an inexhaustible source of inspiration for her work. In particular, Ans Wortel has managed to portray feelings such as love, security, dreams, fears, the growth of the child into adulthood and mother-child relationships in a very good way.
The performances Wortel made consist of human figures who seek, embrace or, on the contrary, repel each other. The eyes, hands and face always play an important role. The figures in her work seem to float in undefined spaces. Root's work often evokes associations with the universe through the indication of the moon and stars, the contours of the globe or horizon. Sometimes there is a surreal landscape, cool and deserted, in which the figures are left to their own devices. Ans Wortel has also written a number of collections and a biography.
Prizes: First prize at the Biennale de la jeunesse in Paris
