Hendrikus IJKELENSTAM
Painter, draftsman, graphic artist, moulder.
Born in Utrecht in 1897, died in 1993 in Amsterdam.
Education: IJkelenstam was educated from 1913 to 1916 at the State School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam. From 1915 to 1916 he also attended an evening course at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and from 1916 to 1920 a full course there.
After his art training, IJkelenstam, who often signed ?Ykelenstam?, settled in Amsterdam in 1925. He made graphic works and oil paintings of cityscapes, still lifes and portraits in naturalistic style and became especially known for his portraits and atmospheric city views of Amsterdam. In 1929 IJkelenstam made a foreign trip to France, to which he has visited regularly since then. He also traveled only two times to Madrid, Toledo and the surrounding area. He visited Florence, Rome and other Italian cities in 1955, 1958 and 1959. IJkelenstam was a member of several artists' associations, including Arti et Amicitiae and De Onvangenen, and from 1951 he taught drawing at the Municipal Secondary School for girls in Amsterdam.
Exhibitions and prizes:
IJkelenstam has received several awards; twice, in 1925 and 1928, he was awarded the St. Luke Award. In 1919 he received the Willink van Collen Prize from Arti et Amicitiae. In 1939 he received the French title ?Officier d'Acad_mie? and in 1959 the bronze medal of this same Order of Academic Palms.
