Henri PLAAT (Amsterdam 1936 - 2023)
Graphic designer, Visual artist, short film maker, draftsman/painter.
Course:
Versatile artist Henri Plaat was born in Amsterdam and grew up in the neighborhood behind the concert hall. Due to his frequent absenteeism, he left his Gereformeerde Gymnasium education prematurely. A number of tests showed that the applied arts school typology department would suit him best. After completing his typology training, Plaat worked as a graphic designer for a short time. Because he thought this was too limited, he also started drawing. In 1963, he decided to devote his career to the visual arts and also started painting and watercolor painting. He also made sound editing under a pseudonym Henri Schweben, a number of his short films will also be released under this name. Like many of his films, his sound collages often had the Second World War as their subject. His fascination for this theme arose, among other things, from watching war newsreels in the film museum in the year he left grammar school. It is precisely the tragedy of the war that he wants to turn into the absurd, because 'tragic situations inevitably have absurd aspects'.
Henri Plaat has made many different works, varying from gouaches, drawings, collages, lithographs, etchings, oil paintings, forty films, sound collages, cartoons, texts and series of photographs. Nevertheless, Plaat is best known for his landscape work, which mainly consists of collages composed of squares or diagonals. In addition to the well-known landscape work, Plaat also started the Goddesses series in the eighties. A series of gouaches in which he depicts the silhouettes of human figures in combination with African images.
