Louis Favre ? (born 15-9-1892, died 17-4-1956) - The Frenchman Louis Favre (1891-1956) was literally and figuratively a colorful artist. Trained as a surveyor, he left for Paris at the age of 21 to become a painter. In addition to the visual arts, he was also active in other fields. In the 1930s, for example, he was involved in radio technology and wrote a radio play, a number of fairy tales and a detective novel. He made several study trips to North Africa. In 1946 Lois Favre decided to give up painting and devote himself entirely to lithography in order to create ?original? to create works of art for a large audience. His first lithograph exhibitions in Vienna and Berlin sold out almost immediately. From 1947 he illustrated bibliophile editions of stories by Edgar Allen Poe and poems by Arthur Rimbaud for the publishers Stols and Mouton & Co, based in The Hague. There he married a Dutch woman (the painter L. Bos). Favre's work was highly regarded in the Netherlands. Much of his post-war lithograph work, which was called "groundbreaking" has disappeared from Dutch collections. Pierre Janssen praised him for being one of the first to restore the lithography technique that had fallen into disuse at the time. Critic Jos de Gruyter (later director of the Groninger Museum) wrote about him in the Vaderland: ?His colors are as rich as those of a Gothic church window?. In 1993 Louis Favre's widow donated a collection of his lithographs, gouaches and drawings to the Groninger Museum.
