After his training in Orléans, Gauguin spent six years in the merchant navy. He later served in the French Navy. Returning to France in 1870, he became an assistant to a stockbroker. Gustave Arosa, who became Gauguin's guardian when he lost his mother at the age of 19, introduced him to painting. The same Arosa had also helped him get his job in the Navy and later at the bank. Arosa is therefore a key figure in Gauguin's life, because he would indirectly also have a major influence on Gauguin's art. This was also due to the fact that Arosa had a great love for amateur photography and was good friends with Nadar, who took pictures as reproductions of important monuments in the world, such as Trajan's Column and the Parthenon. Gauguin married in November 1873 to the Danish Mette Sophie Gad, with whom he had five children. He became a successful stockbroker, as well as an art collector and, as can be seen today, a highly accomplished amateur painter, working in the Impressionist style. In 1882 the stock market collapsed and Gauguin lost his job. By 1884, Gauguin moved with his family to Copenhagen, where he had less success in a career as a sales representative for a French textile manufacturer. However, he preferred to paint full-time and so returned to Paris in 1885, after the failure of an exhibition of his work in Denmark. He could not properly support his wife and children, so his wife went back to her family.La vision apr
