Primitivism

Primitivism is a movement in which artists strive to return to the time before modern civilization, the primitive. After the idea of the primitivists, everything was then still uncorrupted simple and original. The spontaneous and naive are central to this art. The works can often be recognized by a lack of perspective and the abstraction of the subject.

Primitivism is emphatically not the art of indigenous or prehistoric peoples, that is primitive art. Primitivism revolves around the Western interest in primitive art and the use of its features in contemporary art.
