Willem WITSEN (Amsterdam 1860 - Amsterdam 1923)
Willem Witsen was educated at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam from 1878. He was on the board of the Sint-Lucas artists' association and also founded the Dutch Etching Club. Witsen's work was exhibited for the first time in 1883 and three years later he received an encouragement prize for young talent. Witsen was one of the Tachtigers, a group of young Dutch artists who exercised a great deal of artistic and political influence. In 1900, the artist, photographer and etcher won a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. Witsen specialized in cityscapes, which are considered his strongest work. He also painted many flower still lifes and portraits during his lifetime. Witsen's studio, the so-called Witsenhuis, still exists as a national monument.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Presentation at the Venice Biennale, 1895 and 1897. Gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, 1900
