Depiction: Cows lying and standing in the meadow, one of which is being milked by the farmer on the right.

Dimensions: Handmade paper with watermark: approximately 19 cm high x 24.5 cm wide. The dimensions of the plate are: 14 cm x 20.5 cm. The paper is somewhat yellowed, a corner is damaged and a strip of old (passe-partout) tape is visible around the back. On one side, handwritten text is still visible under the old tape, probably the title/location of the work.
AJ Groenewegen: born May 1, 1874 Rotterdam / died January 8, 1963 in Horn.
Groenewegen studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He continued to live and work there until 1898. He then went to The Hague and from 1923 to 1963 he lived and worked in Budel in North Brabant.
However, Groenewegen also painted characterful portraits, still lifes, interiors with peasant figures, animals and river views
The painter Adrianus Johannes Groenewegen is seen as one of the last painters of the Hague School. He was a student at the Academy of BK in Rotterdam. He mainly painted typical Dutch landscapes, usually with figures and cattle. Groenewegen is best known for his watercolors depicting cattle, painted in fresh colours


This rare etching requires attention from a paper restorer. The etching is somewhat yellowed, a corner is damaged, and a strip of old (passe-partout) tape is visible around the back. See the attached photos for an impression of the condition of the etching.
