    Information about the artist:
Ans (Anna Maria) Wortel (Alkmaar, October 18, 1929 - Hilvarenbeek, December 4, 1996) was a Dutch visual artist, writer and poet.
She mainly made gouaches and oil paintings, but also watercolors, drawings, collages, mixed media, lithographs, etchings, sculptures, glass sculptures and glass reliefs. She was self-taught.
In Amsterdam in the 1960s she became known and had exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum and in the Museum Van Bommel in Venlo. In 1963 she won the prestigious 1st prize at the Biennale de la Jeunesse in Paris. The Rijksmuseum also purchased her work. Many exhibitions at home and abroad followed. She became a much sought-after radio and television personality.
Ans Wortel worked and lived for over 20 years in Bergen NH in the famous Kranenburgh house where she surrounded herself with art by herself and many others.
Ans Wortel's work is strongly autobiographical. Her experiences as a girl, woman, mother and artist formed her inspiration. Common themes are love, security, mother-child relationships and criticism of the group norm. Her performances consist of human figures, who seek each other, embrace each other or reject each other.
