There are a number of orange-brown spots on the paper, but that doesn't make the work any less fun! The work was obtained from an inheritance (bought by grandfather for father at art dealership H. Bos - "De Poort" located in The Hague from 1928 to 1941). The frame and glass are still in very good condition.
"In the period 1918 to 1927, Anton Pieck made 60 woodcuts. This oeuvre also included one or two different animals each year in addition to his other subjects, such as nature, villages, cities, ex-libris and birth announcements. Pieck's first successful woodcut was 'Four Chickens' in 1918. This was printed hundreds of times, sometimes in gray, but usually with red combs. After scoring the drawing, the gray ink was smeared on the block with one finger and the red areas were filled in with the other finger, then a piece of rice paper was placed over it and carefully rubbed off. When you look at the lazy chickens, it is no wonder that many people have focused on this picture. The art of omission is highly developed here. Several sheets full of sketches preceded the final composition and yet the poultry seems to have been placed and cut out effortlessly and with a loose hand in its characteristic position on the stick."
