Beautiful work by Aras Kareem.
Beautiful use of color and typical Cobra elements. The whole is in excellent condition.

Kareem is from Iraqi Kurdistan. In 1992 he organized an exhibition in memory of the mass murder in Halabdja, the town that was bombarded with poison gas on behalf of Saddam Hussein. That was during the period when there seemed to be relative freedom in northern Iraq, shortly after the Gulf War. He also became a member of the Kurdish artists' union and had previously evaded military service in the war against Iran. Since then, life has been made impossible for him and he was forced to flee his native country.
For Aras Kareem, drawing and painting are as natural as eating and drinking. His studio shows enormous productivity: the walls are full of his latest paintings and under the worktop are stacks of folders with work, neatly organized by period. The announcements of exhibitions and newspaper clippings on the wall remind us that Aras Kareem has already built up a name here. Aras Kareem has lived in the Netherlands since 1994. His work has changed since then: "In Kurdistan my work was always related to my environment. The mountains, the village, the people who lived there, the response to the Gulf War. It was mostly abstract and that was a big problem because I had to explain what it meant and I can't do that. You can't explain art with words. Art speaks through the feeling. When I'm working it's like a dream and my language is the colors."
Aras Kareem works without a preconceived plan or preliminary studies. Children's drawings are an important source of inspiration for him. He immediately converts impressions gained into colors, lines and surfaces. Eastern culture and symbols from the collective subconscious form both the basis and background of his work. Both his way of working - the use of children's drawings as inspiration and working directly without preliminary studies - and his work itself are reminiscent of the colorful and expressive paintings of the artists from the Cobra group. Yet Kareem had never heard of these painters before coming to the Netherlands. Cobra does not occur in Iraqi art education. He has now become an admirer of Corneille and Appel.
"I never work directly from a model, that would impose too many restrictions on me. I work from my head, from the memory of what I have seen. I follow my finger and use my nail, I want to design. I work like a child. I prefer to sit here and draw with my four-year-old daughter. Then I can watch her draw endlessly."
Aras Kareem received his art training at the Center for Visual Arts in Iraq. Shortly after graduating, he exhibited at renowned art institutions in Paris and London. In the Netherlands he exhibited at The Gate Foundation, Het Tropenmuseum and De Veemvloer. (source Kunstbus)
