Dirk Oeghoede was born in Ansus, ( Irian Jaya ) in the Dutch East Indies in 1944.
At the age of 18, he returned to the Netherlands in 1969 and completed his education at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch. Dirk Oeghoede belongs to the same artistic movement around the city of 's-Hertogenbosch in the eighties, such as Cornelis de Voogd, Pieter Stoop, Johan Claassen, Johan de Mug, Henk Pieterse, Zita Theelen.
This was followed by numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad. Oeghoede also made numerous study trips to Indonesia. During these trips he visited various islands and their cultures and was a guest lecturer at the Jakarta Art Institute, where he also exhibits. Since 1984 he lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.
The four elements, water, air, earth and fire are common currency in his work and he is obsessed with shamanism, or the four directions in which man orients himself in the universe. He repeatedly feels irresistibly drawn to the primitive tribes in the tropical forests of Sumatra. The human bond, the deeper communication, the meaning of symbols, spirituality in everyday life. All these experiences make him let go and have strongly influenced his art. It brings together two cultures: the old magic (East) and the modern rational (West) art. In other words, it connects the art of the heart with the art of thinking.
