François-Étienne Musin (Belgian, 1820-1888) was born in Ostend. He was a student of François Bossuet and enjoyed great success during his lifetime. Between 1840 and 1888 he took part in numerous exhibitions in Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Liverpool and Dublin, as well as in America. He was a prolific artist who tended to favor dramatic maritime incidents, but would occasionally paint a calm view, especially of his native Belgian coast.
Musin died at the age of 68 in Brussels. His paintings are represented in many public collections around the world, including in Ostend, Brussels, Antwerp, Nice, Montreal, London and Bristol.
