Geert Geerligs: Dutch painter of landscapes

Place of birth/date Bussum 1919-12-21
Place of death/date Zeist 1989-06-03

Name variations: Gerard Dorus Geerligs, Geert Geerlings, Gerhard Geerlings,

Geert Geerligs was always working, in his studio in De Oude School in Kortenhoef or on his boat. He loved the Kortenhoef and Loosdrecht lakes, the Vecht from Utrecht to Muiden, and the boats that sailed on the water.

In summer he could often be found in Spain and the south of France. He then worked in the vicinity of Alicante, Finistrat, Figueras, Cadaques, Gerona, Barcelona, Moraira and Agde. There, too, he felt attracted to the water. He mainly visited the fishing villages. The Spanish fishing towns with their boats in the harbour, sometimes dried up on the beach and the steep roads leading to the top, breathe the atmosphere of a warm summer day. He also recorded the beach with beach guests.

He was also an excellent portrait painter and had a great eye for still lifes.

Geert Geerligs was born in Bussum. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and was in class with such celebrities as Karel Appel and Constant Nieuwenhuis, who later became Cobra painters. He was a member of the Gooise artists' association Laren-Blaricum and “De Kring”. His work was regularly shown at Kunstzaal Hamdorff in Laren.

In a smooth impressionistic touch, he captured numerous subjects with a great sense of color in watercolor paint. Working from his boat or his smaller rowboat, he saw the world from below. Many of his maritime depictions are made from this frog's perspective. The inland vessels are moored to a bollard or bollard. The pleasure yachts with enjoying people on board also did not escape his eye. Or the beach guests in Loosdrecht or on the Spanish coast. His oil paints have a great layering, made up of numerous colors. If you look closely, you will always discover something new in Geert Geerligs' work.
A figure on the quay, a fisherman in a boat or a hiker in a mountain town. Geert Geerligs does his color dances.
