Geerard Johan (Gerard) van Lerven (24 November 1885 in Arnhem – 14 June 1966 in Arnhem) was a Dutch painter, etcher, draftsman and academy director. Life and work He was a son of innkeeper Nicolaas Hendrik van Lerven and Petronella Johanna Dijkstra and a younger brother of the painter Henri van Lerven. He was educated at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid Amsterdam as a student of Georg Sturm. He was also taught by Albert Hemelman. Van Lerven painted, etched and drew village views and landscapes, flower still lifes and portraits. He married Mechtelina Frederika Ansink (1885-1973) in 1911. From 1914 Van Lerven was a teacher and from 1922 director at the academy for visual arts and applied arts of the Art Practice Society in Arnhem. He retired at the end of 1950. His pupils included Kees Bastiaans, Julia Beelaerts van Blokland, Jan Berfelo, Bob Damen, Marius Kolvoort, Piet te Lintum, Ben van London, Edlef Romeny and Albertine Vellenga. Van Lerven was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and the artists' association Sint Lucas. He participated in various exhibitions, including with Gijs Jacobs van den Hof at Artibus Sacrum (1932) in Arnhem and had solo exhibitions in the Geldersche Kunsthandel (1916) and the Hengelose Kunstzaal (1955). He received the bronze (1942) and gold (1960) medal from the Art Practice Society. Gerard van Lerven died in 1966, at the age of 80.
