    Information about the artist:
Hans Bayens (Hastière-Lavaux, November 12, 1924 - Amsterdam, July 19, 2003) was a Dutch sculptor, painter, graphic artist, monumental artist, textile artist and draftsman.
Bayens was born in Belgium as the son of Dutch artists Han Bayens and Elisabeth Polak. He graduated from the Barlaeus gymnasium in Amsterdam and then studied at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp (1946-1949). He studied with, among others, Isidore Opsomer and sculptor Henri Puvrez. After his studies he left for Paris. In 1952 Bayens returned to Amsterdam to settle there for good.
Bayens worked as a painter in an impressionistic style. He made portraits of famous Dutch people such as Willem Drees, Wim Kan, Maurits van Loon, Geert van Oorschot and Kees Verwey. As a sculptor he made a number of bronze statues of Dutch authors such as Multatuli, Nescio, Theo Thijssen, Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken. He is considered to belong to the group of Independent realists.
Hans Bayens is known as 'the sculptor of Dutch literature'. His large works in public space are loved by a large audience, such as the statues of Multatuli, Theo Thijssen and Herman Gorter.
