Johannes, Josephus (Hans) Mengelberg (Utrecht 1885-1945), developed into a skilled sculptor, painter and designer of church furniture and pottery in his father's studio.
In 1926 he founded a studio with the company name Hans Mengelberg's kerkelijke interieur kunst and in this way managed to break away from the neo-Gothic influences that he had received at home. He could now focus more on the modern movements in the visual arts, such as Art Deco style, the Amsterdam School, Nieuwe Zakelijkheid and De Stijl. He was inspired by Gerrit Rietveld and Jan Toorop among others and developed into a versatile and contemporary interior artist.
In the 1930s, as a freelance designer, he supplied various designs for religious objects (statues, holy water fonts) to the Royal Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda and the Tegel- en faiencefabriek Westraven in Utrecht.
The holy water jar is intact and signed by Hans Mengelberg and produced by Westraven.
