Horace Mann Livens is probably best known for painting the earliest portrait of Vincent van Gogh. Livens became friends with Van Gogh during their joint studies at the art academy in Antwerp in 1885-1886.
The two kept in touch even after Van Gogh left for Paris. Livens himself moved to England where he was a founding member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (founded 1898 with Whistlers as its first president).
Liven's work is highly regarded on a qualitative level, although the majority of his works were destroyed during The Blitz. A considerably other part of his oeuvre was reduced to ashes in 1957 - during a fire in his widow's house.
