Jan Cremer (Enschede, April 20, 1940 – Amsterdam, June 19, 2024), was a Dutch sculptor, collagist, etcher, illustrator, lithographer, painter, novelist, screen printer, wood carver and photographer.
-Education: Academy of Fine Arts Arnhem in 1956 (he had to leave after one semester). He also studied at the Free Academy in The Hague. In Paris he took lessons in painting and graphic techniques.
Jan Cremer is best known for the novel “Ik, Jan Cremer” from 1964 and “Ik Jan Cremer”, second book from 1966. He also wrote plays.
His 'Peinture Barbarisme', comparable to that of Karel Appel, caused a shock in society. From a review: "Jan Cremer has the ability to shock, attract attention and sell himself as a daredevil with demonstrable talent".
Quote from Jan Cremer: "Rembrandt? Who is that? I don't know anything about cycling.".................
Jan Cremer lived his last years alternately in Tuscany, Italy, and Amsterdam with his wife Babette Cremer-Sijmons. He died in 2024 at the age of 84 and was buried at Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam.
