Information about the artist:
Jan van der Zee (Leeuwarden, February 16, 1898 - Groningen, December 15, 1988), graphic artist, painter and monumental artist.
-Education: He received drawing lessons from Jan Mankes and studied at Academy Minerva (1919-1922) in Groningen, where he was taught by FH Bach and Willem Valk, among others.
-Subjects: Jan van der Zee painted (gouache, oil paint) and watercolor landscapes, portraits, still lifes and cityscapes. He also made graphic art in the form of linocuts and woodcuts. The Groningen landscape in particular, with its farmers and their horses, but also the city itself, are an important source of inspiration.
-Style: Jan van der Zee belonged to the early Dutch constructivists. Although he abstracted his subjects within the figurative work, they never really became abstract.
He was a member of De Ploeg (1923-1948), then of Het Narrenschip. In 1958 he co-founded the Groningen painters' group NU.
Jan van der Zee also made monumental work. Examples are the mosaic wall (1960) for the teacher training college at the Verzetstriderslaan. He designed a number of stained glass windows for the Martini Church.
