Joep Nicolas, born in 1897, became known as a stained glass artist. He learned the trade at the F. Nicolas en Zonen studio, his grandfather's company. In addition to his production of stained glass, he worked as a painter and draftsman. For a short time he designed vases for the Leerdam glass factory. In the period 1939-1958 Nicolas lived in the United States, where he provided dozens of churches with windows. Due to the reconstruction, there was a lot of work available when he returned to the Netherlands. Nicolas' work is described as expressive and colorful, but he refused to stick to one style and had no interest in expressionism and abstract art. As a stained glass artist for churches, he had a great deal of knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith and Biblical iconography. Much can be seen in public places, for example in the city hall of Breda, the abbey of Orval and the city hall of Roermond.
