Karel Appel - lithograph EA, signed bottom right and '66 - Sold

The Dutch painter, sculptor and poet Karel Appel (1921-2006) was born in Amsterdam. He was the son of a barber and destined to succeed his father. Nevertheless, he chose the National Academy of Visual Arts. After the war he traveled to Liège and Paris. In November 1948, Appel was involved in the founding of Cobra. He was inspired by primitive art, children's drawings and outsider art, which he considered unspoiled and pure. Appel painted spontaneously and arrived at a result while working. He himself put it as follows: 'I'm just messing around'. Appel painted and made collages and sculptures with simple shapes and bright colors. In 1953, after the São Paolo Biennale, Appel had his international breakthrough. Since then he has exhibited all over the world. By 1990, the celebrated artist had studios in New York, Connecticut, Monaco and Tuscany.
